The Poetry Composition and Recitation started at 11:30 a.m. at Nelson Mandela Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Jamia Millia Islamia. It was a tri-lingual event.  The Judges presiding the event were , Dr. Rehman Mussawiri, Department of Hindi, Jamia Millia Islamia, Dr. Akhlaq Ahan, Department of Urdu, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, and Assistant Professor, Mr. Abdul Hameed, Department of English, Delhi University.

The event was conducted in two parts; Poetry Writing, followed by Recitation. 52 participants turned up for the event. The participants were required to write poetry on a theme given to them through a painting. The event ended at 02:30 p. m. The results will be announced in the Valedictory Session on 18th Feb. 2016.

Baitbaazi Competition !

DSC_0059MiRASS Day 3 (March 14 ) began with Baitbaazi Competition at Dr. M.A. Ansari Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. with all vibrancy and verve. Baitbaazi has been a rich cultural heritage of Jamia Millia Islamia. Carrying forward this tradition, the Cultural Committee of Jamia Millia Islamia organised the Inter-University Baitbaazi Competition. In the crowded auditorium, the aura was full of energy and applause.

A total of fourteen teams from various renowned universities and colleges like Jawaharlal Nehru University, St. Stephen’s College, Jamia Hamdard , Dr. Zakir Hussain College, including Jamia Millia Islamia participated. Each team comprised three persons. There were three rounds of competition culminating in the final show. Each team presented amazing performance and recited beautiful couplets of the  renowned Urdu poets.They were showered upon with thunderous applause and cheer.

The serenity of Urdu, spiced with wit, feelings, and thoughts gelled well with the overwhelming aroma of the auditorium. The audience was really mesmerized and enchanted and remained glued to their seats.

The event was smoothly conducted by Mr. Naushad Manzar and Mr. Saquib Faridi. Mr. Mohd. Abid, Mr. Haroon Rasheed, Mr. Habibur Rahman and Miss Siddiqua Yasmeen presented Ghazals to  conjunct the rounds.

Two eminent personalities Prof. Shahnaaz Anjum and Prof. Suhail Ahmad Farooqui made their gracious presence to judge the event.

Dr. Sarwarul Hoda, Dr. Ismat Jahan, Dr. Mehar Fatima, and Dr. Mohsin Ali among others recited couplets as prompters to the competing teams.

Prof. Shahnaaz Anjum imparted her worthy remarks to the participants to groom their poetic talents further.

The final results would be announced in the Valedictory Session.

Creative Writing Composition 2015!

MiRAAS 2015, Day 2 (March 13) was again full of enthusiasm and energy. Creative Writing Competition, an endeavour of Jamia Literary Club was organised at 2:45 pm at Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace  and Conflict Resolution, Jamia Millia Islamia. 127 students from various universities and colleges across India participated in the event to showcase their creative energy. The topic for the on spot composition was ‘Bus Stop’ a common day-to-day meeting place for people. The participants had to write a short  story or a One- Act-Play on the given theme . They had a liberty to choose to write in Hindi, Urdu or English.The time allotted was one hour to complete the composition.

The participants were well engrossed in putting down into words their creative thoughts and feelings. An imaginative expression was palpable on the faces of the young budding writers.The highest number of compositions were in Urdu, followed by Hindi and English.

Three eminents personalities namely Dr. Mehnaz Ansari, Dr. Khalid Mobasshir, and Dr. Dilip Kumar Shakya would be judging the event for English, Urdu, and Hindi respectively.

This event could be successful due to the collective efforts of the Convenor Dr. Kehkashan A. Saad along with Co-Convenors Dr. Sarwarul Hoda, Dr. Mehar Fatima and Dr. Quazi Firdausi Islam.

Literati’s Delight

Poetry Competition and Recitation is one of the  age old traditions of India. Carrying forward this legacy, Jamia Literary Club has become one of the pioneering clubs of the country. Poetry Competition and Recitation, MiRAAS 2015 is another such event which invites young charming faces with budding poetic talents to display their hidden poetic elements. It is needless to describe the pleasure of attending such shows when the poetic utterance emanates from the hearts of blossoming poets. We can recall Nelson Mandela’s words “A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”

In the on spot poetry composition and recitation in three languages Urdu, Hindi, and English, 60 participants came from various universities and colleges across India. The topics were in the form of photographs, out of which the participants had to choose only one for their individual composition. The themes included visuals from diverse fields ranging from Peace, Communal Harmony, Culture, Nature, Village Life, Education, Gender, War, and Conflict, etc.

Beautiful compositions were followed by enchanting recitals of the poems by the participants. This filled the room with a gush of emotions and feelings. The highest number of compositions were in English, followed by Hindi and Urdu. Some of the favourite themes were Gender Equality, Nature, Communal Harmony etc. The judges ‘ panel had threes esteemed personalities, namely Prof. Ghaznafar Ali (Urdu), Dr. Rahman Musawwir (Hindi) and Dr. Ayesha Irfan (English). They were pleasantly surprised by the skillful performances of the young poets.They extended their warm appreciation and also imparted some valuable advice to the  eager participants.

Baitbaazi

The third day of Miraas started with revival of Jamia Millia Islamia’s age old and lost tradition of bait-baazi. The M.A Ansari auditorium was the venue for the bait-baazi competition. Technical interruptions led to slight delay, and the competition started  at 10:30am. Saquib Imran and Naushad Manzar compeered the eventDSC_0734

Bait-baazi was the sole competition in Miraas that had contestants from only within the NCR, however, that failed to make a difference to the intensity of competition. The team from Jamia Senior Secondary School was a special entry in the competition as it was competing against the senior rivals.
DSC_0778The participating teams were named after renowned Urdu poets for the sake of anonymity during judgment. Two competing teams were called on stage, one after another through the picking of slips by the judges. Four out of eight teams were selected for the second round which decided the award winning teams. Dr. Khalid Mubasshir and Mr. Farhat Ehsaas were the judges of the competition.  The judges recited couplets at the beginning of every round, which acted as prompters for the participants. The audience actively took part in the competition by cheering for the participants.

Mr. Farhat Ehsaas gave his worthy remarks at the end of the competition, stating that  the competition was judged on choice of couplet, pronunciation and most importantly on the manner of recitation. He also gave his best wishes to the participants and congratulated Jamia Millia Islamia on having successfully conducted the program.

Creative writing report

DSC_0214The creative writing competition was conducted at the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution at 2:30 pm.  The competition was trilingual in Hindi, Urdu and English. Dr. Arshad Ikram from the Department of Education Studies adjudged the entries in English. Dr. Khalid Javed from the Dept. of Urdu and Dr. Chandradev Yadav form the Dept. of Hindi were the judges for Urdu and Hindi respectively.

Participants were given an hour to write on the topic “Something Amiss” (Kuch khoya hua sa). The parameters judgement was of vocabulary and creativity. This event, like all others in MiRAAS witnessed a wide range of participation from institutes across the country.

Poetry Composition and Recitation Competition- A Report

Ayesha Begum B.A.(H) English III JMI

The Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution was the designated venue for the poetry writing and recitation competition. The participant, some aspiring poets and some closet poets came up with poems that were vivid, showing the great effort that they had to make in the limited time allotted to them. The competition was held in three separate language categories, English, Hindi and Urdu. The competition judged the participants’ writing skills and also their oratory skills. There were two stages to the competition, first stage was writing and the second stage was recitation.

The participants were given different photographs as themes for their poems they were expected to base their poems on what the photograph inspired in them.  Ayesha Begum a student of B.A. (H) English III, Jamia Millia Islamia, was given a photograph of two hands on which she modelled her poem and titled it “A Monologue”.

The Urdu Poetry was judged by Dr. Akhlaq Ahan (JNU), the English division was judged by Dr. Ayesha Irfan (Dayal Singh College) and the Poetry in Hindi was judged by Ms Manjari Srivastav, a renowned contemporary poet of the Hindi language.

Participants included students from institutes across the country with Lady Sri Ram College (DU), Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, Bhopal (Noida Campus), Centre for Management and Development, Modinagar and Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, to name a few.
